DLR Group Crafts Carbon-Neutral Dining Commons for Swarthmore College

Swarthmore College, Pennsylvania, has taken a decisive step toward its ambitious goal of becoming carbon-neutral within the next decade. Central to this mission is its newly completed 60,000-square-foot dining and community commons, designed by DLR Group with sustainability at its core.

The project, a blend of innovation and tradition, showcases how higher education campuses can embrace environmentally responsible growth while accommodating a rapidly expanding student population.

Mass Timber: A Sustainable Backbone

At the heart of the design is the use of mass timber construction, including Northern pine glulam beams and cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels. Built in collaboration with Mid-Atlantic Timberframes, the structure actively sequesters carbon, turning the building itself into a climate-conscious asset.

Leaving the timber framework exposed inside not only highlights its natural beauty but also creates a warm, biophilic atmosphere that complements framed views of the Scott Arboretum, home to over 4,000 species of trees and plants.

Architecture That Blends Sustainability and Community

While sustainability was the driving force, design excellence was equally important. The exterior features durable slate tiles, while the interiors balance custom terrazzo flooring, white-oak booths, and cascading pendant globes to create a welcoming and vibrant communal hub for up to 800 diners.

The building was envisioned not just as a dining hall, but as a social commons, strengthening campus community life in an inclusive, modern setting.

Renewable Energy at Work

Behind the aesthetic appeal lies a network of cutting-edge sustainable technologies:

  • Rooftop photovoltaic cells generate clean solar energy.
  • A subterranean geo-exchange system harnesses the earth’s energy for heating and cooling, contributing to campus-wide renewable energy use.

This holistic approach positions the facility as a flagship model for sustainable campus architecture in the U.S.

Leading the Way in Higher Education Sustainability

DLR Group’s project for Swarthmore College demonstrates how design innovation and environmental stewardship can converge to meet institutional climate commitments. With its carbon-sequestering mass timber, renewable energy systems, and community-centered spaces, the dining and community commons sets a new benchmark for carbon-neutral campus buildings nationwide.
