Technology & Infrastructure News
Hitachi Energy has announced a major reinvention of its Ellipse Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) platform by integrating advanced artificial intelligence technologies from Microsoft. The initiative aims to enhance the resilience, safety, and operational efficiency of critical infrastructure systems worldwide, including power grids, transportation networks, and large-scale industrial facilities.
The enhanced solution combines decades of asset management expertise with modern AI-driven analytics and enterprise platforms. By integrating tools such as Microsoft Dynamics 365, Microsoft Fabric, Microsoft 365 Copilot, and Microsoft Foundry, the updated Ellipse platform enables organizations to shift from reactive maintenance strategies to predictive, data-driven asset lifecycle management.
AI-Powered Infrastructure Management
Critical infrastructure assets—including electricity grids, rail systems, and manufacturing facilities—are often decades old and face growing stress due to rising demand, climate-related disruptions, and aging components. Failures in such systems can lead to widespread power outages, safety incidents, environmental damage, and economic losses.
The new Ellipse platform is designed to address these risks by integrating operational data, analytics, and enterprise systems into a unified solution. The platform can analyze multiple datasets across supply chains, workforce planning, and financial operations to recommend optimal maintenance schedules and operational decisions.
According to Massimo Danieli, Executive Vice President and Managing Director of the Grid Automation Business Unit at Hitachi Energy, the collaboration represents a significant advancement in infrastructure management.
“Hitachi Energy has decades of experience building and operating the infrastructure that keeps modern life running. Microsoft technology accelerates and enhances value to our Ellipse customers while offering essential service providers the ability to operate more intelligently and sustainably,” Danieli said.
Strengthening the Hitachi–Microsoft Technology Alliance
The latest development builds on the strategic partnership announced in June 2024 between Hitachi, Ltd. and Microsoft Corporation. That alliance aims to integrate Microsoft’s cloud and AI technologies into Hitachi’s Lumada digital solutions platform.
With the reinvention of Ellipse EAM, the collaboration now extends directly into the energy and infrastructure sectors, combining more than 40 years of asset management expertise from Ellipse with Microsoft’s enterprise cloud and AI capabilities.
Dayan Rodriguez, Corporate Vice President for Manufacturing and Mobility at Microsoft, emphasized the operational benefits of the partnership.
“Critical infrastructure operators need insight they can act on. Together with Hitachi Energy, we’re combining AI, cloud, and enterprise systems to help organizations move from reactive maintenance to predictive operations, improving reliability, safety, and long-term value,” Rodriguez said.
Eliminating Data Silos in Asset Management
Traditionally, enterprise asset management systems operate independently from enterprise resource planning (ERP) and customer relationship management (CRM) systems. This separation creates data silos that limit visibility and lead to inefficiencies.
The new integrated solution connects these previously isolated systems, enabling utilities and infrastructure operators to achieve:
- End-to-End Visibility: A unified source of data for assets, financials, and operational performance.
- Optimized Asset Management: Real-time coordination between EAM and ERP systems for improved forecasting and budgeting.
- Improved Reliability: AI-powered predictive maintenance that reduces downtime and extends equipment life.
- Streamlined Processes: Automated workflows that accelerate maintenance orders and operational decisions.
- Regulatory Compliance: Integrated reporting that supports environmental, social, and governance (ESG) objectives.
Implementation Through Global Integration Partners
The solution will be deployed through a network of system integrators, including Hitachi Solutions, which will act as a strategic advisor for implementation and deployment. The company recently received recognition as Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance Partner of the Year, highlighting its experience in delivering large-scale digital transformation projects.
Soichiro Ohara, Chairman and CEO of Hitachi Solutions America, Ltd., noted that the company will focus on accelerating deployment and ensuring measurable business outcomes for customers adopting the AI-driven platform.
Advancing Digital Transformation in Infrastructure
The redesigned Ellipse EAM platform forms part of the Asset & Work Management suite within the HMAX Energy portfolio of digital services. HMAX solutions apply artificial intelligence and advanced analytics to modernize infrastructure operations across sectors such as energy, transportation, and heavy industry.
By transforming asset management systems into intelligent, data-driven platforms, the integration is expected to help organizations transition toward proactive operations, reduce maintenance costs, and enhance service reliability.
