Jacobs Selected to Design Light Rail Extension in Seattle

SEATTLE, WashingtonJacobs (NYSE: J), a global leader in infrastructure design and engineering, has been chosen to lead the design for Sound Transit’s West Seattle Link Extension. The project will extend Seattle’s light rail network by 4.1 miles, featuring a new bridge, tunnel, and four new stations — connecting the SODO neighborhood with Alaska Junction in West Seattle.

This design project is a vital step toward expanding Seattle’s public transportation system, aimed at reducing commute times by up to 50% and supporting community and economic development.

“Transportation infrastructure enhances mobility and provides vital economic growth and community opportunities,” said Ron Williams, Executive Vice President at Jacobs. “The West Seattle Link Extension will serve as a gateway to the community, with streetscapes and public spaces that resonate with residents.”

Jacobs will lead Phase 1 of the project, which involves design and design validation services. With a 70-year history of transportation work in the Puget Sound region — including 30 miles of previous light rail expansions — Jacobs brings deep experience to this transformative effort.

  • Length: 4.1 miles
  • Includes: One tunnel, a new bridge, and four stations
  • Connectivity: Links SODO to Alaska Junction
  • Commute Time: Up to 50% faster on key lines
  • Completion: Service expected to begin in 2032

Beyond improving mobility, the extension is set to catalyze local development near new stations, supporting retail growth and affordable housing initiatives. It also offers an essential alternative to the heavily trafficked West Seattle Bridge during peak hours.
