Konecranes Shows Hydrogen Carrier at TOC 2025

Konecranes has introduced its groundbreaking Noell Hydrogen Fuel Cell Straddle Carrier at the TOC Americas 2025 exhibition in Panama City, marking a major step toward a low- and zero-emission future for the port equipment industry. The innovation headlines Konecranes’ presentation alongside the E-Hybrid RTG and electric empty container handler, reflecting the company’s commitment to sustainable material handling solutions.

The Hydrogen Fuel Cell Straddle Carrier is currently undergoing performance testing at Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG’s (HHLA) hydrogen test field in Hamburg, Germany. Early results indicate that the machine delivers equivalent performance to diesel and hybrid models, combining zero tailpipe emissions with robust operational capability.

“Hydrogen fuel cells have so far been used mainly in light equipment, but this new straddle carrier represents a major leap forward for heavy material handling,” said Thomas Gylling, Director of Marketing & Customer Experience, Port Solutions, Konecranes. “It’s part of our Ecolifting initiative, which aims to eliminate tailpipe emissions from our entire port equipment range through all-electric and hydrogen options by 2026.”

E-Hybrid RTG: A Battery-Driven Breakthrough

Also showcased at the event, the Konecranes E-Hybrid RTG combines advanced battery technology with cable reel or busbar power systems connected to local grids. The batteries serve as the primary energy source, charging automatically when required. This hybrid system offers a reliable and cost-effective solution for terminals facing frequent power outages, reducing dependence on diesel and lowering infrastructure costs compared to fully electric RTGs.

Electric Empty Container Handler Expands Availability

The Konecranes electric empty container handler, launched globally in late 2024, is now available across the Americas. Equipped with modern high-voltage battery technology, it enables up to 12 hours of continuous operation on a single charge. Deliveries have already begun in multiple regions, with customers reporting strong satisfaction and performance results.

Konecranes’ leadership in digitalization, technology, and circular economy principles continues to position the company at the forefront of sustainable port operations. With a focus on decarbonization, safety, and efficiency, Konecranes aims to transform global material handling and accelerate the transition to cleaner logistics systems.
