Konecranes Launches E-Hybrid RTG and Electric Empty Container Handler at TOC Europe 2025

Konecranes took a significant step toward full port electrification by launching its E-Hybrid Rubber-Tired Gantry (RTG) crane and electric empty container handler on a global scale. These innovations support Konecranes’ commitment to offering fully electric versions of its entire port equipment portfolio by 2026.

E-Hybrid RTG: Flexible, Resilient, and Efficient

The new E-Hybrid RTG goes beyond traditional hybrid cranes by combining battery-powered operation with cable reel or busbar electrical charging, ensuring operational continuity even during blackouts—a growing concern for terminals worldwide.

“The E-Hybrid RTG is a game-changer. It protects terminals from grid interruptions while advancing their shift to electric operations,” said Thomas Gylling, Director of Marketing & Customer Experience, Port Solutions, Konecranes.

Key features of the E-Hybrid RTG include:

  • 60 kW electrical power requirement – far lower than traditional electric RTGs, reducing infrastructure costs.
  • Onboard battery charging during regular operations.
  • Field-proven components, including battery systems used in over 200 Konecranes hybrid RTGs globally.

A Brazilian terminal has already placed the first order for the E-Hybrid RTG, signaling strong market interest.

🚛 Electric Empty Container Handler Rolls Out in Europe & North America

Also unveiled was the 9–10t electric empty container handler, now available across Europe and North America, following successful rollouts in Asia, MEA, and Latin America.

Customers have praised its:

  • Fast acceleration and lifting speeds
  • Quick charging
  • Low noise and vibration
  • Zero tailpipe emissions

This model joins Konecranes’ expanding electric lift truck series, which already includes 10–18t and 18–25t forklifts.

🌱 Ecolifting: Konecranes’ Path to Sustainable Ports

These launches are part of Ecolifting, Konecranes’ strategic initiative to:

  • Reduce customers’ carbon footprints
  • Expand its positive environmental handprint
  • Deliver eco-optimized, hybrid, and fully electric equipment for greener ports

“We will continue to help customers do more with less—more efficiency, less emissions,” added Gylling.
