Skanska has announced the substantial completion of the 40,300-square-foot Belmont Skating Rink and Athletic Facility in Belmont, Massachusetts, delivering a modern, energy-efficient replacement for the former Viglirolo Skating Rink. The project was constructed on the same site following the demolition of the original rink.
Mark Haley, Chair of the Building Committee, noted that Skanska “provided construction expertise in a professional manner” and aligned partners effectively to achieve the town’s goals.
Bryan Northrop, Executive Vice President and General Manager for Skanska USA Building’s New England Region, highlighted the project’s legacy, saying the team is proud to help revitalize a longtime community landmark. The new Belmont Skip Viglirolo Rink continues the tradition of serving youth and high school hockey, figure skating, and recreational programs.
Designed by The Galante Architecture Studio, the facility incorporates a state-of-the-art, fossil-fuel-free, CO₂-driven ice plant, extensive rooftop solar panels, and long-term energy-efficient systems. Design Principal Ted Galante emphasized the project’s sustainability-first approach, supported by the Town of Belmont’s commitment to future-ready infrastructure.
Key features include:
- A steel-framed, pre-engineered 40,300-sq-ft building
- A regulation 200 ft x 85 ft ice sheet
- Four high-school team locker rooms and four additional dressing rooms
- Bleacher seating, public restrooms, and concessions
- A heat pump refrigeration system and energy recovery systems
- PV solar panels installed on the main roof
The rink adds to Skanska’s portfolio of athletic facilities across New England, including work at Deerfield Academy, Boston College, and Northeastern University’s Matthews Arena.
