Skanska Expands Österåker Correctional Facility in Sweden with SEK 1.3 Billion Contract

Stockholm, Sweden – Skanska, one of the world’s leading construction and development firms, has signed a SEK 1.3 billion contract with Specialfastigheter Sverige AB to expand and renovate the Österåker Correctional Facility, located just north of Stockholm. This latest phase will be included in Skanska’s Swedish order bookings for Q2 2025, with project delivery expected in stages through autumn 2027.

Project Scope: Modernizing Swedish Correctional Infrastructure

The comprehensive project includes:

  • Reconstruction of two existing buildings
  • New construction of 13 modern buildings, including inmate housing and support facilities
  • Development of several smaller service structures
  • Extensive ground and foundation work

Skanska has been involved in early-stage construction and preparatory work at the site since early 2022. The newly signed agreement represents the final phase of the extensive project.

Total Investment Reaches SEK 2.7 Billion

With previously invoiced work included, the total project value for Skanska is now estimated at SEK 2.7 billion. The expansion reflects Sweden’s broader commitment to modernizing correctional infrastructure, increasing capacity, and improving rehabilitation services for inmates.

“This project demonstrates our strong partnership with Specialfastigheter and our continued role in delivering secure, sustainable public infrastructure across Sweden,” said a spokesperson for Skanska Sweden.

Long-Term Benefits for the Justice System

The expanded Österåker facility is expected to:

  • Increase capacity and functionality
  • Support more humane and rehabilitative environments
  • Enhance security systems and operational efficiency

The project will also generate employment during construction and contribute to regional economic activity in Österåker Municipality.
