AECOM to serve as project lead designer for Bangkok’s MRT Orange Line West Project

AECOM, the world’s trusted infrastructure consulting firm, today announced that it has been selected by CH. Karnchang Plc (CK) to serve as the project lead designer for the Metropolitan Rapid Transit (MRT) Orange Line West Project in Bangkok, one of the largest rail infrastructure projects in Thailand.

At a length of 13.4 kilometers, the Orange Line’s western section will stretch from the Thai Cultural Centre to Bang Khunnon with 11 underground stations. When connected to the eastern section of the Orange Line, currently under construction, the full 35.9-kilometer transit line will link Bangkok’s eastern and western sides and bolster the city’s regional connectivity.

“We look forward to applying our global rail capabilities on this key segment of Bangkok’s rapidly growing transit network,” said Mark Southwell, chief executive of AECOM’s global Transportation business. “As the industry’s leading rail and mass transit firm, our teams bring the innovative tunnelling, station design and integrated rail systems expertise needed to ensure this project’s timely and seamless delivery.”

AECOM’s role includes the design of twin bored tunnels and tunnel ventilation systems, the design of 11 underground stations including all structural works, architectural works and building services, and the design of trackwork systems for the mainline and depot extension.

“We’re thrilled to be part of Thailand’s efforts to provide better connectivity and transportation for all,” said Ian Chung, chief executive of AECOM’s Asia region. “This win is a testament to AECOM’s unmatched experience and capabilities in transit development throughout Southeast Asia, where our work on Thailand’s Purple Line and other metro projects gives us unique local insight to support Bangkok’s goal of providing alternative and sustainable transportation.”

As a key engineering design consultant for infrastructure projects in Asia and the Southeast Asian region, including the Thai market, AECOM has provided engineering design services to CK on numerous rail projects such as the MRT Blue Line Project (1997), MRT Blue Line Extension (2011), MRT Orange Line East Section (2017), and MRT Purple Line (South) (2022).

AECOM has also been involved in completing other major rail projects for clients across Southeast Asia such as the Klang Valley MRT Putrajaya Line in Malaysia, the Thomson East Coast Line in Singapore, as well as in delivering ongoing rail projects in Singapore and Malaysia.
