STRABAG Secures Major Contract for SuedLink Power Corridor, Advancing Germany’s Energy Transition

STRABAG AG has been awarded a major contract by TransnetBW to deliver civil engineering works for a key section of the SuedLink direct current underground power transmission line in Germany. This project is critical for Germany’s energy transition, designed to transport renewable energy, especially wind power from northern coastal regions, to the energy-demanding south. STRABAG’s contract covers the 34.5-kilometer section between Gerstungen and Breitungen in Thuringia, part of a larger effort to expand Germany’s power grid to support the shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources.

The SuedLink and SuedOstLink corridors, central to Germany’s energy infrastructure expansion, will span 700 kilometers and 540 kilometers respectively, connecting renewable energy generation sites to regions requiring increased energy supply. STRABAG, leveraging its position as Germany’s market leader in transportation infrastructure, will execute the necessary civil engineering and earthworks. These involve advanced techniques such as horizontal directional drilling (HDD) to navigate obstacles like roads and rivers without surface disruption.

With this contract, STRABAG AG’s cumulative project awards for SuedLink and SuedOstLink exceed €1.1 billion, solidifying its role in reshaping Germany’s energy landscape. The company’s scope of work also includes sections totaling 205 kilometers for TransnetBW and over 120 kilometers for SuedOstLink, highlighting its extensive involvement in Germany’s energy transition.

STRABAG’s commitment to innovation and sustainability is evident through its integrated lifecycle approach to infrastructure projects. The company emphasizes digital design, sustainable practices, and resource-efficient construction methods, ensuring minimal environmental impact. Klemens Haselsteiner, CEO of STRABAG SE, expressed pride in the company’s contributions to these critical infrastructure initiatives, aligning with the firm’s Strategy 2030, which focuses on growth in the energy sector.

Founded in 1923 and now part of Austria-based STRABAG SE, STRABAG AG continues to lead the German market with an annual output of €3.8 billion in transport infrastructure, supported by 14,000 employees. Globally, STRABAG SE generates around €19 billion in annual output and is involved in over 250 innovation and 400 sustainability projects, reinforcing its dedication to climate-conscious and resource-conserving construction solutions.
