Warsaw West station returns to service as one of the country’s most advanced transport hubs
Budimex, the Polish subsidiary of Ferrovial, has officially reopened Warsaw West station following nearly five years of comprehensive reconstruction.
Located in western Warsaw, the upgraded station is now the largest railway junction in Poland, serving up to 60,000 passengers daily and handling nearly 1,000 trains per day.
A Complete Rebuild Under National Rail Strategy
The project was delivered as part of Poland’s National Railways Program and involved demolishing the former station and constructing a new, modern facility from the ground up.
Key infrastructure upgrades include:
- A new northern entrance hall
- Nine surface-level platforms
- A 63-meter-wide underground access corridor
- A fully modernized track system
The underground passageway at Level -1 connects passengers directly to platforms and also functions as a commercial arcade, integrating retail and dining facilities into the transport hub.
Advanced Rail Infrastructure
The modernization significantly expanded technical capacity and operational efficiency.
The new rail system comprises:
- Over 35 kilometers of track
- 137 turnouts
- 191 railway signals
- Nearly 580 passenger information displays
Platforms span approximately 35,000 square meters and are connected via elevators and escalators, improving accessibility and passenger flow.
Sustainability Built Into the Design
Environmental performance was a central feature of the Warsaw West station modernization.
The station includes a photovoltaic installation covering more than 8,000 square meters. The solar array is expected to generate roughly 30% of the facility’s electricity demand, reducing reliance on external energy sources and lowering operational emissions.
Workforce and Scale
At peak construction, approximately 600 workers and 160 pieces of heavy equipment were deployed daily to deliver the project.
The result is a multifunctional transport and service hub described as one of the most technologically advanced railway stations in the region, designed to meet rising passenger volumes while supporting Poland’s broader rail modernization goals.
With the reopening of Warsaw West station, Budimex strengthens its position in large-scale infrastructure delivery and reinforces rail’s role as a backbone of sustainable urban mobility in Poland.
