AECOM Celebrates Opening of Landmark Schuylkill River Trail Extension in Philadelphia

Global infrastructure leader AECOM has marked a significant milestone with the completion of the $48 million extension of the Schuylkill River Trail, enhancing pedestrian and cyclist access between Christian Street and Grays Ferry Crescent. This transformative project features Pennsylvania’s first cable-stayed pedestrian bridge, redefining urban mobility and access to green space in the heart of the city.

Pioneering Design and Engineering

The trail extension includes:

  • A 650-foot-long cable-stayed bridge, an engineering first in the state
  • 1,200 feet of boardwalk approach structure over the river’s tidal zone
  • 2,800 feet of new on-grade trail to seamlessly connect existing segments

Originally awarded the design contract in 2016, AECOM led the project from feasibility studies through final design and construction, overcoming significant logistical challenges including:

  • Navigating industrial zones and active rail corridors
  • Coordinating around major utilities and existing overhead infrastructure
  • Ensuring flood resilience and long-term structural durability

The bridge’s lattice-patterned cables nod to the iconic Brooklyn Bridge, creating a new visual landmark in Philadelphia’s skyline.

Sustainable Mobility and Community Impact

The trail extension is a game-changer for non-motorized transportation, creating a fully off-road route connecting Center City to Southwest Philadelphia. It promotes:

  • Reduced traffic congestion and carbon emissions
  • Safer, continuous pedestrian and bike access
  • Increased foot traffic for local businesses and tourism

“The extension of the Schuylkill River Trail represents a transformative investment in Philadelphia’s transportation and recreation infrastructure,” said Sam Donelson, CEO of AECOM’s U.S. East and Latin America region.
“We’re proud to deliver a world-class facility that enhances urban livability and fosters long-term sustainability.”

Resilience, Innovation, and Lasting Impact

From stormwater management to community-centric design, AECOM applied its deep technical expertise to ensure the trail’s resilience in the face of climate and infrastructure challenges.

“This project demonstrates AECOM’s commitment to sustainable and resilient infrastructure,” added Michael Girman, Mid-Atlantic Transportation Lead.
“By meeting the unique constraints of this site, we’ve helped deliver a safe and inclusive public space that will serve the community for decades.”
