Electric Power Drives Liebherr’s Latest Crane Deliveries to Italy

Electric Power Drives Liebherr’s Latest Crane Deliveries to Italy

Liebherr is expanding its footprint in Italy with the delivery of four new mobile harbour cranes, underscoring its commitment to energy-efficient, future-ready port solutions. The shipment includes:

  • Two electrically driven LHM 550 cranes for IPM Bari
  • One LHM 420 for La Nuova Meccanica Navale in Naples
  • One electric LHM 420 for Interporto Rivers Venezia in Porto Marghera

These advanced cranes will support a diverse range of port operations — from grain discharge in Bari to ship repair in Naples and bulk and scrap handling in Porto Marghera.

Strengthening Italian Ports with Electric Drive Technology

At IPM Bari, the two LHM 550 cranes, each with a 154-tonne lifting capacity and 54-metre outreach, will boost high-volume grain handling. The cranes are equipped with e-drive technology for locally emission-free operations when connected to shore power.

  • Advanced operator cabins help reduce fatigue and improve visibility.
  • LED floodlighting enhances safety during night operations.
  • The addition of these cranes supports Bari’s growing role in regional milling and pasta production logistics.

Powering Shipyard Precision in Naples

La Nuova Meccanica Navale is set to replace an ageing crane with a new LHM 420, designed to handle heavy-duty shipyard operations such as removing hatch covers and transferring large machinery.

With a 124-tonne lifting capacity and 48-metre outreach, the LHM 420 provides agility in tight quay spaces, ensuring efficient and precise lifting. This investment reflects the company’s confidence in Liebherr’s reliability and operator-friendly design.

Sustainable Handling at Porto Marghera

Interporto Rivers Venezia strengthens its operations with an electric LHM 420, complementing its existing Liebherr fleet of four cranes. This move aligns with the terminal’s strategy to modernize handling capacity and reduce local emissions, supporting bulk and scrap handling operations efficiently.

A Future-Ready Strategy for Italian Ports

Liebherr’s electric drive technology and high-capacity cranes enable Italian terminals to achieve:

  • Faster loading and unloading cycles
  • Quieter and cleaner operations
  • Reduced local emissions when shore power is available
  • Flexible use for different cargo types — from grain to bulk, scrap, and containers.

“Italian ports present a unique mix of requirements, from precision lifting in shipyards to high-volume bulk discharge,” said Andreas Ritschel, General Manager Sales Mobile Harbour Cranes at Liebherr-Rostock GmbH. “By pairing electric drive options with proven reliability, we are delivering performance that meets operational targets and reduces local emissions where shore power is in place.”

Engineering Excellence and Strong Partnerships

Liebherr’s long-standing collaboration with Mac Port, its exclusive sales and service partner since 2009, ensures nationwide support for Italian customers. Mac Port provides:

  • Spare parts and field service
  • Operator training
  • Retrofit kits for existing diesel cranes to convert to electric power.

This partnership ensures that Italian ports can operate more sustainably while maintaining high performance.

Supporting the Next Phase of Port Modernization

As Italian ports invest in digital tools and infrastructure, Liebherr’s electric mobile harbour cranes provide adaptable, future-ready assets. They’re built to meet the evolving needs of terminals — supporting everything from grain and bulk handling to ship repair and container operations — while reducing environmental impact.
