Washington D.C., July 2025 – A joint venture between Skanska, Flatiron, and Dragados has been awarded a $1 billion contract by the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA) to construct the Long Bridge North Project, a transformative infrastructure development that will significantly expand and modernize rail service in the Capital Region.
The Long Bridge North Project, a one-mile rail corridor, will stretch from East Potomac Park to Washington D.C.’s L’Enfant Interlocking. This is the first phase of a larger 1.8-mile Long Bridge Project aimed at replacing the aging two-track system with a series of modern four-track bridges and corridors, facilitating improved connections across local, regional, and national transportation networks.
Once completed, the upgraded eastern tracks will be primarily used by CSX Transportation Inc. (CSXT) for freight service, while the new western tracks will accommodate passenger trains operated by Amtrak Virginia, Amtrak’s long-distance services, and Virginia Railway Express (VRE).
Michael Viggiano, Executive Vice President of Skanska USA Civil, emphasized the project’s regional impact: “Skanska is proud to lead the Long Bridge North Project, which will vastly improve rail service in the Capital Region. With funding and approvals in place, the project is now shovel-ready.”
The Skanska-FlatironDragados Joint Venture (JV) will undertake the comprehensive replacement of the existing two-track corridor with four tracks, beginning near the Potomac River shoreline, passing through East Potomac Park, crossing the Washington Channel, and connecting to the L’Enfant Interlocking.
Jim Schneiderman, Executive Vice President of FlatironDragados, added, “Through close collaboration with Skanska and VPRA, we have optimized the project’s design and execution plan to minimize construction risk and ensure greater schedule and cost certainty.”
Construction is scheduled to begin in July 2025, with project completion expected in Q4 2030. The Long Bridge North initiative is being delivered in partnership with multiple stakeholders, including CSXT, Amtrak, VRE, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), National Park Service (NPS), the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), and other agencies.
