ACCIONA Energía to Install Two New Battery Storage Systems in Spain

Projects in Cuenca and Palencia will add 33MW of battery storage capacity, with commissioning planned for late 2027.

ACCIONA Energía will install two new battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in Spain, strengthening the country’s renewable energy infrastructure.

The projects will be located in Cuenca and Palencia. Both systems will have a two-hour storage duration and are scheduled to enter operation by late 2027.

Two Battery Storage Projects

The first project will have an installed capacity of 20MW. ACCIONA Energía will build the system near the 50MWp Bolarque photovoltaic plant in Villalba del Rey, Cuenca.

The second project will provide 13MW of installed capacity. It will be located near the 22MW El Cuadrón wind farm in Hornillos de Cerrato and Torquemada, Palencia.

Together, the two projects will provide 33MW of battery storage capacity. They will also support the integration of renewable electricity into Spain’s power system.

Supporting Renewable Energy Integration

Battery energy storage systems can help manage fluctuations in renewable generation. Solar and wind power depend on weather conditions, which can cause electricity production to vary.

By storing electricity and releasing it when needed, BESS projects can help balance supply and demand. They can also support grid stability and reduce reliance on fossil-fuel generation.

Furthermore, energy storage can strengthen the security and flexibility of the electricity system as Spain increases its renewable energy capacity.

ACCIONA Energía Expands Storage Experience

ACCIONA Energía has developed energy storage projects in Spain for several years. In 2017, the company commissioned Spain’s first hybrid battery storage system integrated with a grid-connected wind farm in Barásoain, Navarre.

More recently, in 2024, the company installed an energy storage system using second-life electric vehicle batteries. The system operates at the Extremadura III photovoltaic complex in Almendralejo, Badajoz.

The company has also expanded its storage activities internationally.

In the United States, ACCIONA Energía developed the Cunningham battery storage project in Texas. The facility has an installed capacity of 190MW/380MWh and connects to the Texas electricity grid.

Meanwhile, in Chile, the company is constructing a 200MW/1GWh battery storage system at the Malgarida photovoltaic plant in the Atacama Desert.

ACCIONA Energía has also announced another 196MW/980MWh storage project at the El Romero photovoltaic plant in Chile. That facility is expected to begin operations by the end of 2027.

The two new Spanish projects will therefore add to ACCIONA Energía’s growing portfolio of battery storage assets. They will also support the wider integration of renewable energy into Spain’s electricity system.
