AECOM JV Secures Major Contract for Northern Metropolis Highway in Hong Kong

AECOM , the trusted global infrastructure leader, has announced that its joint venture with AtkinsRéalis has been appointed by the Highways Department of the HKSAR Government to provide a full suite of technical services for the Northern Metropolis Highway (NMH). This landmark project is designed to enhance east-west connectivity across Hong Kong’s ambitious Northern Metropolis development, a critical move aimed at accelerating economic growth and fortifying the region’s R&D and tech sectors.

“We’re proud to partner with the Highways Department to build a smarter and more connected Hong Kong and Greater Bay Area,” said Mark Southwell, Chief Executive of AECOM’s global Transportation business. “Our innovative solutions and experience in highways, viaducts, and tunnels uniquely position us to execute this efficiently and cost-effectively.”

The AECOM-AtkinsRéalis joint venture will undertake engineering feasibility studies, constructability analysis, preliminary design, and impact assessments covering traffic, environment, land acquisition, and more. Advanced technologies like digital twins, BIM, and Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DfMA) will be employed to ensure cost-effective designs and accelerated timelines.

“Our teams have decades of experience in Hong Kong’s transport infrastructure,” said Ian Chung, CEO of AECOM’s Asia region. “This corridor is a key priority, and we’re fully committed to delivering world-class infrastructure that meets the community’s needs.”

The NMH spans 23 kilometers, connecting Tin Shui Wai in the west with New Territories North New Town near Ping Che in the east. Once complete, it will alleviate congestion on key arteries like Yuen Long Highway, San Tin Highway, and Fanling Highway.

Designed as a dual three-lane highway, the NMH will feature at least eight major interchanges linking both existing and future development areas. It is one of three major projects unveiled in the Strategic Studies on Railways and Major Roads beyond 2030, a vision in which AECOM also played a significant role.

This engagement further cements AECOM’s leadership in transportation infrastructure and supports Hong Kong’s strategic urban and mobility transformation.
