Fortune Recognizes Cemex for Freshwater-Free Concrete Initiative in Mexico

Cemex has been included in Fortune’s 2026 Change the World list for its freshwater-free concrete initiative in Mexico. The program replaces freshwater used in ready-mix concrete production with alternative water sources.

Cemex Reaches 67% Freshwater Substitution

The initiative achieved a 67% freshwater substitution rate across Cemex’s ready-mix operations in Mexico in 2025. The company prioritizes water-stressed regions while maintaining concrete quality, safety and operational performance.

The program uses alternative water sources that are unsuitable for human consumption or agriculture. As a result, Cemex aims to reduce pressure on freshwater resources while improving operational resilience.

“Water scarcity is one of the most important challenges facing communities and industries, and this initiative shows how business can be part of the solution,” said Ricardo Naya, Executive Vice President of Sustainability, Operations, and Ventures at Cemex. “By rethinking water use in concrete production, we are reducing pressure on freshwater resources while strengthening the resilience and efficiency of our operations.”

31 Mexican Plants Achieve Zero-Freshwater Certification

As part of the initiative, 31 Cemex concrete plants in Mexico have received certification under AENOR’s Zero Freshwater and Zero Discharge Framework.

The certification verifies that the plants use no freshwater for concrete production and operations. Meanwhile, Cemex has started replicating the model across operations in France, Spain and the United States.

Fifth Fortune Change the World Recognition

This marks the fifth time Cemex has received recognition from Fortune’s Change the World list. The annual list recognizes companies for creating social impact through activities connected to their core business strategies.

Cemex previously received recognition for initiatives including Patrimonio Hoy, the Growing Platform of Inclusive Businesses, its COVID-19 response through mobile hospitals and VeryNile.

The freshwater-free concrete initiative demonstrates how changes in construction material production can support water conservation while maintaining operational requirements.
