Jacobs UK Nuclear Planning for Innovative Energy

Jacobs has been appointed by Great British Energy – Nuclear (GBE-N) to provide planning and consenting services for the development of small modular reactor (SMR) projects in the United Kingdom. The appointment supports the country’s efforts to expand nuclear energy and strengthen long-term energy security.

Jacobs to Lead Planning and Consenting Services

Under the agreement, Jacobs will deliver strategic planning, consent support, and leadership for key land-use planning activities required to advance project approvals.

Initially, the company will focus on proposed SMR developments at the Gwyndod (formerly Wylfa Newydd) and Oldbury-on-Severn sites. The scope may later expand to include additional locations that support GBE-N’s future nuclear ambitions.

Furthermore, Jacobs will work alongside planning consultancy Quod, which will serve as the project’s planning subconsultant.

Supporting Major Project Approvals

The project includes a wide range of planning and regulatory services, including:

  • Development Consent Order (DCO) applications
  • Town and Country Planning Act applications
  • Statutory stakeholder engagement
  • Socio-economic assessments
  • Traffic and transport studies
  • Community impact evaluations

These activities aim to streamline approvals while ensuring developments consider regional, environmental, and community needs.

Supporting the UK’s Energy Transition

Jacobs Executive Vice President Richard Sanderson said new nuclear generation will play an important role in improving energy security while supporting the transition to lower-carbon electricity systems.

He added that successful delivery requires careful planning, strong community engagement, and effective navigation of the UK’s complex regulatory framework. Jacobs will help create a planning strategy based on detailed analysis, stakeholder input, and long-term regional considerations.

Meanwhile, GBE-N Chief Executive Simon Roddy said the organization selected Jacobs and Quod because of their expertise in planning and consenting for large-scale energy infrastructure.

Building on Nuclear Industry Experience

Jacobs brings more than 60 years of experience in delivering civil nuclear projects across the entire asset lifecycle. The company has supported major UK nuclear programs, including:

  • Sizewell C
  • Hinkley Point C
  • Sellafield

In addition, Jacobs recently secured another contract from Great British Energy – Nuclear to provide environmental services for potential SMR development at the Oldbury site.

Strengthening the Future of UK Nuclear

The latest appointment reinforces Jacobs’ position as a key partner in the UK’s nuclear sector. As global demand for reliable low-carbon energy continues to grow, the company’s planning expertise will help accelerate the development of small modular reactors while supporting future infrastructure projects both in the UK and internationally.
