John Deere Names Rector Excavating Winner of Building America Excavator Contest

John Deere has named Rector Excavating Inc. of Kentucky the winner of its Building America Excavator Contest.

The nationwide contest celebrates construction businesses that strengthen local communities through infrastructure work. Rector Excavating won after a public vote among three John Deere-selected finalists.

As the winner, the family-owned company will receive a new John Deere mid-size P-Tier Excavator. The machine will support its water, storm sewer, site development and infrastructure projects across Northern Kentucky.

Family Business Supports Northern Kentucky

Rector Excavating began in 2000 when Patrick Rector’s father started the company. Patrick later joined the business full time after high school.

He worked as an operator and labourer before becoming a foreman. He later moved into estimating, customer relations and crew management.

Today, the company carries out water main and service installations. It also handles storm sewer and site development projects for schools, apartments and other developments.

The business remains family-run. Patrick works alongside his parents, Randy and Tina, his wife Trisha and other relatives and team members.

Building Stronger Local Infrastructure

Rector Excavating has completed major water infrastructure projects across Northern Kentucky. The company has installed tens of thousands of feet of waterline for residents who previously relied on wells, cisterns or hauled water.

The company also completes stormwater projects that help protect homes from flooding.

One project holds particular significance for Patrick Rector. His team installed water service and fire protection at the elementary school he attended as a child.

The school had relied on well water that was becoming insufficient. Rector Excavating helped provide the school with a clean and reliable water source.

New Excavator Will Support Stormwater Work

The new John Deere excavator will soon support another local infrastructure project. Rector Excavating plans to use it on stormwater improvements in an established neighbourhood.

The project aims to address runoff and flooding concerns near local homes. It will include 36-inch storm pipe and deep manholes.

According to Rector, the project is an ideal application for the new excavator. The machine will provide another important tool for the company’s infrastructure work.

Supporting the Next Generation

The contest also highlights the importance of skilled trades. Rector hopes the company’s story will encourage more young people to consider careers in construction.

John Deere Global Marketing Manager for Excavators Jon Gilbeck praised the company’s community commitment. He said Rector Excavating shows how building America begins at the local level.

Rector also stressed the importance of giving back to the community. He believes construction businesses can help introduce younger generations to skilled trades.

The John Deere Building America Excavator Contest highlights how local construction companies contribute to stronger communities. Rector Excavating’s win also showcases the role of family businesses in developing essential infrastructure.
