Skanska Secures $163 Million Contract for East Side Greenway Waterfront Project in New York

Skanska has secured a $163 million (approximately SEK 1.5 billion) contract to construct a new waterfront connection in New York City.

The company signed the agreement with the New York City Department of Design and Construction for the East Side Greenway 14th Street Connector project.

The development will improve pedestrian and cycling access along the East River while creating new public spaces for residents and visitors.

Skanska will include the contract value in its US order bookings for the fourth quarter of 2026.

Skanska East Side Greenway Project to Improve Waterfront Connectivity

The Skanska East Side Greenway project will establish a continuous waterfront connection between East River Park and Captain Patrick J. Brown Walk.

The new infrastructure aims to provide a safer and more accessible route for pedestrians and cyclists.

Currently, improving connections between existing waterfront areas remains an important objective of the development.

The project will address this need by creating a dedicated waterfront link that supports walking, cycling and recreational activities.

As a result, New Yorkers and visitors will benefit from improved access to the East River waterfront.

New Esplanade to Feature Pedestrian and Bicycle Paths

A central component of the project is the construction of a new esplanade along the East River.

The waterfront development will include a shared pedestrian and bicycle path, designed to accommodate different users.

In addition, the project will introduce several public amenities to improve the surrounding environment.

These improvements include enhanced landscaping, new lighting, seating areas and other recreational features.

Together, these elements will create a more welcoming waterfront environment while supporting everyday travel and leisure activities.

Furthermore, the improvements aim to make the waterfront more accessible and enjoyable for people using the greenway.

Waterfront Development to Enhance Public Spaces

The East Side Greenway 14th Street Connector forms part of efforts to improve public access and connectivity along New York City’s waterfront.

By connecting East River Park with Captain Patrick J. Brown Walk, the project will help create a more continuous route along the river.

The planned landscaping and public amenities will also improve the experience for pedestrians, cyclists and other visitors.

Moreover, the development is expected to enhance the quality of public spaces in the surrounding area.

The project combines transportation connectivity with recreational infrastructure, supporting a more accessible urban waterfront.

Construction Expected to Begin in Early 2028

Skanska confirmed that design work for the waterfront connector will begin soon.

Following the design phase, groundbreaking is anticipated in early 2028.

The company is targeting completion by the end of 2030.

The construction schedule will allow the project team to develop the new waterfront infrastructure and associated public amenities.

Meanwhile, the contract will contribute approximately SEK 1.5 billion to Skanska’s US order bookings for the fourth quarter of 2026.

Skanska Expands New York Infrastructure Portfolio

The latest contract adds another public infrastructure project to Skanska’s construction portfolio in the United States.

The East Side Greenway development will focus on improving waterfront access, pedestrian safety and cycling connectivity.

In addition, the new esplanade and public amenities will provide recreational opportunities along the East River.

With construction expected to begin in 2028, the Skanska East Side Greenway project represents a significant investment in New York City’s waterfront infrastructure.

Once completed, the connector will provide a continuous route between East River Park and Captain Patrick J. Brown Walk, improving access for residents and visitors.
