Manitowoc Introduces Potain ECS Smart Tower Crane Control System for Emerging Markets

Manitowoc has introduced the Potain ECS tower crane control system, a new platform designed to improve crane operation, monitoring and maintenance.

The Ergo Control System (ECS) combines customizable controls, intelligent data logging and faster fault diagnosis to support tower crane operations.

The technology will become standard on all next-generation Potain tower cranes manufactured in Zhangjiagang, China, and Pune, India.

The first ECS-equipped tower crane is scheduled to launch later in 2026.

Potain ECS Brings Smarter Tower Crane Operations

The new Potain ECS platform aims to simplify crane installation while improving operational efficiency and reliability.

It features a 13.3-inch touchscreen Human Machine Interface (HMI) with a resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels.

The touchscreen provides operators with real-time crane information and access to various control settings.

In addition, the system allows operators to adjust crane movement and speed according to specific lifting requirements.

For example, operators can increase movement speeds for repetitive lifting operations. Alternatively, they can reduce speeds when precise load positioning is required.

This flexibility helps operators adapt crane performance to different jobsite conditions.

CAN Bus Technology Simplifies Installation and Maintenance

One of the main innovations in the Potain ECS tower crane control system is its Controller Area Network (CAN) bus architecture.

The technology replaces complex wiring arrangements with a simplified two-wire communication system.

Traditionally, numerous wires connect a crane’s motors, sensors and switches.

However, the CAN bus system reduces wiring complexity while supporting communication between crane components.

As a result, the system offers several operational advantages, including faster installation, reduced wiring weight and easier troubleshooting.

Furthermore, its scalable design allows technicians to integrate additional functions as new technologies become available.

Intelligent Data Logging Supports Fleet Management

Potain ECS includes a data logging function that records historical crane operating information.

This feature helps equipment owners and fleet managers monitor crane performance and review operational data.

The system also provides information that can support maintenance planning and equipment management.

Meanwhile, technicians can use the platform to identify operational issues and receive recommended troubleshooting steps.

These capabilities aim to reduce diagnostic time and simplify maintenance activities.

Touchscreen Displays Real-Time Crane Performance

The ECS touchscreen provides operators with important information about crane status and performance.

The display includes wind speed, working radius, load weight and slewing angle.

It also connects to a central controller that communicates with key crane systems through CAN bus wiring.

These include hoisting, slewing, luffing and trolleying controls, along with load sensors, limiters and encoders.

Operators can access eight display screens covering crane data, operating preferences, zoning functions and system settings.

In addition, technicians and fleet administrators have access to separate control modes with expanded functionality.

This structure allows different users to access the information and controls relevant to their responsibilities.

Manitowoc Targets Greater Efficiency in Emerging Markets

Leong Kwong-Joon, Regional Product Manager for Tower Cranes in Asia, said the new platform represents a significant advancement for Potain tower cranes.

“The Potain ECS represents a significant advance in the operation, management, and maintenance of tower cranes for emerging markets,” he said.

He highlighted the benefits of improved operator control, faster troubleshooting and better equipment data.

According to Manitowoc, the technology will support construction, energy and infrastructure projects as demand for advanced lifting equipment grows across emerging markets.

Potain Expands Connected Crane Technology

The introduction of ECS marks another development in Potain’s tower crane technology.

By combining digital controls, real-time monitoring and simplified electrical architecture, the platform aims to improve crane usability and maintenance.

Moreover, its customizable settings allow operators to balance lifting speed with positioning accuracy.

The upcoming rollout across next-generation Potain cranes manufactured in China and India will bring these capabilities to customers in emerging markets.

With the first ECS-equipped model expected later in 2026, Manitowoc is preparing to introduce a more connected approach to tower crane operation and fleet management.
