Komatsu Ltd. has strengthened its global AI deployment framework to accelerate artificial intelligence adoption across its worldwide operations.
The company plans to expand AI throughout its entire value chain. This includes product development, manufacturing, sales, and service operations. As a result, Komatsu aims to improve efficiency while delivering greater value to customers.
Building on Years of Digital Innovation
For many years, Komatsu has invested in digital technologies and data-driven solutions. These include Komtrax, KOM-MICS, Autonomous Haulage Systems (AHS), and Smart Construction®.
Through these platforms, the company has collected valuable machine operating data, construction information, and field expertise. Consequently, these assets now form the foundation of its expanding AI strategy.
Global AI Center of Excellence Planned
Since fiscal year 2023, Komatsu has introduced AI use cases across multiple business units and global regions.
The company has also organized workshops, implementation sessions, and international forums to share best practices. Furthermore, Komatsu plans to establish a Global AI Center of Excellence (CoE) from 2027 onward to support worldwide AI deployment.
To strengthen this effort, the company created a central AI enablement function in April 2026. One month later, it appointed approximately 500 AI Transformation Leads to accelerate AI adoption across the organization.
AI Applications Across the Value Chain
Komatsu already uses AI in several core business areas.
Software Development
The company applies generative AI throughout the software development process. AI assists with code generation, code reviews, testing, and code analysis. Therefore, developers can improve productivity while maintaining software quality.
Manufacturing Operations
Komatsu combines KOM-MICS production data with AI to improve manufacturing performance.
The company uses anomaly detection, predictive maintenance, and computer vision technologies to monitor equipment, materials, and production activities in real time. As a result, factories benefit from better production planning and operational efficiency.
AI-Powered Service Support
Komatsu has introduced an AI-powered service bot that helps mechanics and dealers quickly locate technical information.
The system searches service manuals, technical bulletins, and maintenance documents using natural language queries. It currently operates across Japan, North America, Europe, Australia, and Latin America. Meanwhile, deployment continues across Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.
Predictive Maintenance
Komatsu also uses AI to analyze machine operating data collected through Komtrax and other platforms.
The technology predicts component life, detects equipment anomalies, and estimates the best overhaul timing. Consequently, customers can reduce maintenance costs, improve machine uptime, and receive more proactive service support.
Komatsu Accelerates AI-Driven Transformation
Komatsu continues to invest in employee AI training while strengthening information security and governance.
By expanding AI across its global operations, the company aims to improve productivity, optimize business processes, and create greater long-term value for customers worldwide.
