LEEA Introduces Proficiency Testing for Practical Skills
The Lifting Equipment Engineers Association (LEEA) has introduced Proficiency Testing, a new practical assessment route designed to give learners an alternative to traditional multiple-choice testing.
The optional assessment responds to feedback from LEEA members who wanted a more hands-on way to demonstrate their knowledge and skills. Instead of relying solely on theory, the new approach assesses learners in a practical environment using equipment in known repair conditions.
Three-stage practical assessment
The LEEA Proficiency Testing route assesses learners across three key stages:
- Preparation and planning
- Process
- Reporting and justification
Learners must successfully complete each stage to demonstrate the required level of proficiency and achieve the relevant LEEA diploma.
LEEA will apply the same pass criteria to both its multiple-choice and practical assessment routes. This approach is intended to maintain consistent standards, quality and reliability across both options.
Practical Test days will also be scheduled to provide greater flexibility over when learners complete their assessments.
A more flexible route to qualification
Matt Barber, LEEA Director of Membership, said the new assessment was developed after listening to members who preferred demonstrating their skills through hands-on inspection.
He said the initiative represents a shift toward a more learner-centred and inclusive approach to professional qualification. The practical format allows learners to demonstrate their capabilities in conditions that more closely reflect real-world industry activities.
However, the new route will not replace LEEA’s existing assessment method. Learners can still choose the multiple-choice assessment if it better suits their learning and assessment style.
By offering both routes, LEEA aims to provide greater choice while maintaining consistent qualification standards across the lifting equipment industry.
