Celebrating a Strategic Collaboration
Liebherr-Australia and Roy Hill, one of Australia’s largest iron ore mines, have announced a new partnership to enhance mining operations in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. This collaboration was officially commemorated on 11 February 2025, with a special event attended by executives from both companies. The occasion also marked the ceremonial handover of a brand-new Liebherr R 9800 excavator, featuring a pink bucket and counterweight to symbolize support for breast cancer awareness.
Expanding Roy Hill’s Mining Fleet
The R 9800 is the second of three Liebherr excavators being delivered to Roy Hill. The first, an R 9400, was delivered in late 2024, while the third, another R 9800, is expected to arrive by Q2 2025. Liebherr’s reputation for durability, fuel efficiency, and operator comfort played a key role in Roy Hill’s decision to integrate these machines into its fleet.
During the event at Roy Hill’s Perth offices, executives toured the Remote Operations Centre (ROC) before officially receiving the 800-tonne R 9800. To commemorate the occasion, Sophie Albrecht, a member of Liebherr Group’s administrative board, presented Roy Hill CEO Gerhard Veldsman with a replica model of the R 9800, complete with its signature pink accents.
Commitment to Innovation and Support
Trent Wehr, Managing Director of Liebherr-Australia, highlighted the significance of the partnership, stating:
“Liebherr is excited to partner with Roy Hill, a company that shares our dedication to innovation and operational excellence. We look forward to a long and prosperous future working together to unlock new efficiencies and growth opportunities for their mining operations.”
To maximize uptime and operational efficiency, Liebherr-Australia has deployed a dedicated support team at the Roy Hill mine site. This team consists of product support advisors and heavy-duty technicians, ensuring routine maintenance, advanced technical support, and optimized fleet performance.
Patrick Korman, Executive General Manager of Mining Customer Support at Liebherr-Australia, reinforced this commitment, saying:
“We’re eager to support Roy Hill as the company integrates Liebherr equipment into its operations for the first time. This marks the beginning of a strong partnership, and we look forward to ensuring they receive the highest level of service and support as the relationship develops.”
Beyond the Pit – Supporting Breast Cancer Awareness
Liebherr-Australia’s commitment extends beyond mining operations. The pink bucket and counterweight of the R 9800 symbolize solidarity with breast cancer patients and families. This initiative, led by Roy Hill’s Executive Chairman, Mrs. Gina Rinehart, ensures that each pink machine stands as a reminder of the impact of breast cancer.
Wehr emphasized Liebherr’s dedication to this cause, stating:
“Liebherr-Australia is proud to support efforts in raising awareness about breast cancer because we believe in making a meaningful impact in the fight against this disease. According to Australia’s National Breast Cancer Foundation, more than nine Australians lose their lives to breast cancer every day, which is a heartbreaking statistic. As a company, we are committed to helping raise awareness and supporting those battling this disease.”
Through this partnership, Liebherr-Australia and Roy Hill are not only advancing mining efficiency but also making a meaningful impact beyond the industry, demonstrating a commitment to both innovation and community support.
