Poland Rail Tunnel Project Ferrovial Budimex Update

Warsaw, Poland | April 2026 — Ferrovial, through its Construction division, and its Polish subsidiary Budimex have secured a major rail contract for the Podłęże–Gdów sections of the Podłęże–Piekiełko railway line in the Małopolskie region of Poland.

The contract, valued at 2.58 billion PLN (€604 million), ranks among the most complex civil engineering projects in Poland’s national rail programme.

Project Overview

The contract was awarded by PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A., which manages most of the country’s railway network.

The new line will enhance regional mobility and strengthen connections from Kraków to southern Poland. It forms a key part of the country’s broader rail modernization strategy.

Scope of Work

Over a 46-month timeline, the joint venture will deliver:

  • 17.5 km of electrified double-track railway
  • Two parallel tunnels, each about 900 meters long
  • 1.9 km of electrified single track

The project also includes major infrastructure components:

  • 39 bridges and viaducts
  • 24 culverts
  • 2 underpasses
  • 18 retaining walls

In addition, the team will complete extensive ground improvement works, including:

  • 1,244 km of soil-reinforcement columns
  • 112,500 cubic meters of structural concrete

Strategic Importance

This project marks the first tunnelling joint venture between Ferrovial and Budimex. It also strengthens Ferrovial’s presence in Central Europe.

For Budimex, the project reinforces its position as a leading construction company in Poland.

Outlook

The Podłęże–Piekiełko railway line will support economic growth and improve sustainable transportation in the region. The project also highlights Ferrovial’s expertise in complex rail and tunnelling infrastructure.
