S1 Vision: A Self-Balancing, Autonomous Revolution in Material Transport

S1 Vision GmbH, a forward-thinking spin-off of the Liebherr Group, is redefining the future of material transport with its groundbreaking S1 Vision — an autonomous, battery-powered, single-axle transport vehicle built to serve multiple industries including construction, mining, agriculture, logistics, and airports.

In a recent interview, CEO Altan Enginalev shared how this prototype could transform operational efficiency across diverse sectors through smart design, self-balancing technology, and autonomous mobility.

What Makes the S1 Vision Unique?

The S1 Vision eliminates the driver’s cab entirely, offering a single-axle, two-wheel setup that is:

  • Compact
  • Highly maneuverable
  • Extremely efficient

Its payload capacity ranges from 220 kg to 131 tonnes, making it suitable for both small-scale and heavy-duty operations. It can be adapted for various transport needs — hauling, towing, and carrying loads — making it a universal solution for future material handling.

Practical Examples of Use:

  • Moving harvested crops autonomously in vineyards
  • Transporting heavy components inside logistics centers
  • Pulling baggage carts at airports

Technological Innovations

The S1 Vision integrates advanced technologies that make autonomous transport safer and smarter:

  • Self-levelling system for maximum stability on uneven terrain
  • Zero-turn radius for turning on the spot in confined spaces
  • Battery-powered drive for zero-emission and low operating costs
  • Integrated sensors and digital components for autonomous decision-making
  • Future plan: swarm technology, where multiple vehicles communicate and operate together as a coordinated fleet

Development and Future Plans

S1 Vision was developed through collaboration across different Liebherr competence centers. The body stems from the mining segment, while the autonomous technology originates from the earthmoving segment.

What’s next?

  • Commercialization and rapid technological advancement
  • Testing swarm-based autonomous operations
  • Adapting to different industries and environments
  • Seeking partners and customers to expand its market potential

S1 Vision GmbH aims to tap into new markets and customize applications — as the vehicle may not be usable in the same way across every industry, tailored development will be crucial.
