Stantec to Design New BC Cancer Centre at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital

Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, has been selected to design the new BC Cancer Centre at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH). This C$289 million project will bring radiation treatment closer to home for patients in central and north Vancouver Island.

Optimized patient experience

Recognizing the impact of cancer treatment facilities on patient well-being, the new centre’s design will prioritize patient comfort, natural light, and healing views.

The four-storey facility will offer:

  • Radiation therapy, including CT simulator and linear accelerator vaults
  • Outpatient oncology ambulatory care unit with exam & consult rooms
  • PET/CT diagnostic scanner for advanced cancer imaging
  • Oncology pharmacy & outpatient dispensary
  • Sacred space for spiritual and emotional support

Construction timeline

Preliminary site work begins in March 2025, with full construction starting in fall 2025 and completion expected in 2028.

Part of BC’s 10-Year Cancer Action Plan

The BC Cancer Centre at NRGH is part of British Columbia’s 10-year Cancer Action Plan, a collaboration between BC Cancer, Provincial Health Services Authority, and Island Health to enhance cancer prevention, detection, and treatment across the province.
