New Liebherr RE 25 M Railroad Excavator Makes Strong Debut at IAF 2025

New Liebherr RE 25 M Railroad Excavator Makes Strong Debut at IAF 2025

At the 29th International Exhibition for Track Technology (IAF), Liebherr introduced its latest innovation in rail construction: the RE 25 M Litronic. This powerful 25-tonne railroad excavator combines proven components with next-generation technologies, offering maximum safety, comfort, and efficiency in the field. Featuring a hydrostatic rail wheel drive, profiled uppercarriage, and a new intuitive operating concept, the RE 25 M is designed to set a new benchmark for railroad machinery.

“The RE 25 M is a major milestone for Liebherr,” said a company spokesperson. “With a redesigned undercarriage, innovative stabilizer system, and enhanced operator comfort, this machine addresses the evolving demands of modern rail construction while opening doors to new markets.”

Highlights at a Glance

  • New undercarriage concept with hydrostatic rail wheel drive
  • Small tail swing radius (1.57 m) for enhanced clearance profile safety
  • INTUSI operating system and new double cab for superior comfort and control
  • Drawbar pull of 50 kN and speeds up to 40 km/h (60 km/h when towed)
  • Advanced hydraulic system for multi-functionality and high output
  • New Solidlink 33-9 quick coupler developed specifically for rail use
  • New naming convention for future Liebherr rail machines

A Technological Leap Forward

Designed from the ground up, the RE 25 M Litronic combines power and agility. It uses the proven 120 kW engine from the A 922 Rail and an advanced hydraulic system delivering 2 × 220 l/min via double variable displacement pumps. This allows it to operate demanding hydraulic attachments independently of travel movements, thanks to its second high-pressure circuit.

Its hydrostatic rail wheel drive supports category 9A and 9C operation, letting the machine drive and work in lowered or raised positions—a game-changer in preserving rail infrastructure. The newly patented storing and oscillating rail guide system and adjustable oscillating axle enhance traction and stability while maintaining a compact footprint.

Stability Without Compromise

The RE 25 M features optional central two-point stabilizers, delivering high load capacity without obstructing visibility or widening the machine footprint. Even when extended, the stabilizers remain close to the chassis, enabling use in tight jobsite conditions.

Its uppercarriage design improves accessibility and maintenance, with features such as:

  • Maintenance flaps integrated into the counterweight
  • Fold-up exhaust treatment system above the engine
  • Easy access behind the cab despite compact dimensions

Operator-Centric Comfort

Inside the newly developed double cab, Liebherr puts operators first:

  • Comfort seat as standard
  • INTUSI control system for intuitive machine handling
  • New dual-door system swinging around the B-pillar for easier entry
  • Unobstructed field of vision thanks to streamlined control panel integration

The RE 25 M also debuts the Solidlink 33-9 fully hydraulic quick coupler, designed specifically for railroad applications. It supports:

  • Liebherr packing tools
  • Parallel grippers
  • Stick extensions

This system enables safe, fast, and in-cab attachment changes, enhancing productivity across applications.

A New Naming Era for Liebherr Rail Machines

The introduction of the RE 25 M marks a shift in Liebherr’s product naming strategy. “RE” stands for Rail Excavator, “25” for its tonnage class, and “M” for wheeled undercarriage. This change distinguishes dedicated rail machines from Liebherr’s wheeled excavators, signaling a focused commitment to the rail industry. Existing models like the A 922 Rail will continue under their current designations.
