SMT GB has supplied Collins Demolition with the first Volvo EC500HR high-reach excavator operating in the UK.
The new machine expands demolition reach capabilities while supporting heavier attachments for complex structural dismantling projects.
Volvo EC500HR Expands Demolition Reach and Performance
The Volvo EC500HR replaces Collins Demolition’s previous EC380HR, which served the company for three years.
The upgraded excavator delivers greater reach, stronger hydraulic performance and increased tool capacity for demanding demolition work.
Without extensions, the machine reaches 28 meters (92 feet). In addition, interchangeable arms extend the reach to 32 meters (105 feet).
As a result, the EC500HR is now one of the most advanced high-reach demolition excavators currently operating in the UK market.
Collins Demolition immediately deployed the machine on a project in Reading to dismantle a former council building.
SMT GB Provides Warranty and Technical Support
SMT GB included a three-year or 5,000-hour driveline warranty with the excavator.
The support package also covers the first 2,000 hours of servicing, including oils and filters.
Furthermore, SMT GB provided operator familiarization training to help crews quickly integrate the machine into daily operations.
The company also supplied application programming interfaces (APIs) to connect the excavator with Collins Demolition’s existing telematics systems.
According to Jay Fisher, area sales manager at SMT GB, the long-term relationship between the companies played an important role in the delivery.
He said Collins Demolition has consistently taken a forward-thinking approach to equipment investment and operational efficiency.
Machine Designed for Heavy Demolition Applications
The Volvo EC500HR was specifically engineered for demanding demolition environments.
Its hydraulic system and reinforced structure allow operators to use larger crushers and shears while maintaining stability at height.
According to Collins Demolition director Scott Craddock, the machine provides operators with improved confidence, visibility and performance.
The excavator also features an ergonomic cab, intuitive controls and enhanced night lighting for safer operations during low-light conditions.
In addition, the machine achieves a strong balance between speed and hydraulic pressure when paired with a 2.8-ton attachment tool.
Advanced Technology Improves Safety and Efficiency
The EC500HR includes Volvo’s Demolition Assist system, which provides real-time data on machine stability and working range.
As a result, operators can maintain safer operating conditions during high-reach demolition activities.
The machine also includes Smart View technology with obstacle detection to improve visibility and reduce the risk of site incidents.
Furthermore, Volvo optimized the excavator’s engine and pump systems to improve fuel efficiency by up to 15% compared to previous-generation models.
The company also upgraded hydraulic lines and extended service intervals to improve operational efficiency and reduce environmental impact.
Demand Grows for High-Reach Demolition Equipment
The UK demolition sector continues facing increasing demand for higher reach, improved safety and greater operational precision.
Urban redevelopment projects and taller structures require contractors to use advanced demolition equipment capable of handling more complex jobsites.
Consequently, machines such as the Volvo EC500HR are becoming increasingly important for contractors seeking greater productivity, stability and sustainability in demolition operations.
By introducing the first EC500HR into the UK market, Collins Demolition and SMT GB are helping advance high-reach demolition capabilities across the sector.
