Liebherr Produces 2,000th Mobile Harbour Crane – LHM 600 for Marcegaglia

Liebherr has reached a remarkable milestone in its 50-year history of mobile harbour crane production with the delivery of its 2,000th LHM. As a global market leader for over 15 years, Liebherr continues to shape the maritime industry with cutting-edge engineering.

A Milestone in Engineering

The 2,000th LHM, an LHM 600, has been specially designed for Marcegaglia, a world leader in steel processing. This crane, featuring a lifting capacity of 154 tonnes and an outreach of 61 metres, is tailored to handle steel coils, billets, and plates at the Port of Ravenna, Italy. It will be the sixth Liebherr mobile harbour crane in Marcegaglia’s fleet.

Equipped with hydrostatic drive and advanced control systems, the LHM 600 ensures precise, seamless cargo handling, optimizing efficiency and flexibility. Designed to accommodate New-Panamax vessels, the crane will enhance Marcegaglia’s logistics operations.

Tradition Meets Innovation

To commemorate this milestone, Liebherr has crafted a unique slewing platform design that reflects the maritime heritage of both Rostock, Germany, and Ravenna, Italy.

  • Italian Side: Features the Basilica di Sant’Apollinare Nuovo, dock workers in action, and an Italian inscription.
  • German Side: Showcases a lighthouse, German text, and the industrial legacy of Liebherr Rostock.

This artistic fusion symbolizes the strong partnership between Liebherr and Marcegaglia, blending German engineering precision with Italian craftsmanship.

A Legacy of Partnership

The collaboration between Liebherr and Marcegaglia began in 2001 with the delivery of an LHM 400. Since then, five more Liebherr mobile harbour cranes have been added to the Ravenna fleet, each contributing to the port’s development. The LHM 600 now stands as the largest crane in the fleet, increasing capacity while maintaining cutting-edge efficiency and reliability.

Looking Ahead

A handover ceremony is scheduled for summer 2025 in Ravenna to celebrate this milestone.

Andreas Ritschel, General Manager Sales of Mobile Harbour Cranes at Liebherr-Rostock GmbH, stated:
“This milestone LHM 600 exemplifies our commitment to delivering pioneering solutions for our customers.”

With Liebherr’s global service network, Marcegaglia can rely on continuous support and maintenance, ensuring long-term operational success. The LHM 600 represents not just a technological achievement but also a testament to the synergy between two industry leaders, driving the future of maritime logistics.
