Liebherr LTM 1230-5.1 Mobile Crane Enhances Fleet

Bontang, Indonesia – PT Pupuk Kalimantan Timur (PKT), one of Asia’s largest fertiliser producers, has added a Liebherr mobile crane to its fleet for the first time, selecting the LTM 1230-5.1 to support demanding lifting operations at its production facilities. The 5-axle, 230-tonne crane will be used primarily at PKT’s Bontang site to handle complex lifting tasks in fertiliser manufacturing and plant maintenance.

The decision marks a strategic move by PKT to adopt advanced crane technology that meets its strict operational requirements. According to the company, the Liebherr LTM 1230-5.1 stood out as the only mobile crane on the market capable of delivering the necessary performance in steep working positions and at high hook heights.

“The LTM 1230-5.1 is perfect for our requirements,” said Joko Susilo of PT Pupuk Kalimantan Timur. “It is the only crane that fully meets our specific needs in terms of lifting capacity, reach, and efficiency.”

A key advantage of the crane is its 75-metre telescopic boom, which enables PKT to perform a wide range of lifting tasks without additional lattice extensions. The crane’s single-engine concept supports economical operation by reducing fuel consumption and maintenance requirements, an important factor for continuous industrial use.

In addition, Liebherr’s VarioBase®Plus support technology enhances lifting performance, particularly in the rear working area. The system calculates maximum lifting capacities in real time using the LICCON control system, improving both safety and efficiency. Compact dimensions and a small slewing radius further allow the crane to operate effectively in confined areas within the fertiliser plant.

PKT operates a large-scale industrial complex in Bontang with around 1,300 employees and multiple production units, including five ammonia plants, five urea plants, and three NPK plants. Alongside serving the domestic market, the company exports fertiliser products globally and maintains a strong focus on high production standards and modern technology.

“With the LTM 1230-5.1, we can maintain and modernise our plants flexibly and safely,” Susilo added. “Beyond the technical performance, Liebherr’s service quality and reliability also played a decisive role in our choice.”

The addition of the Liebherr LTM 1230-5.1 reinforces PKT’s commitment to operational excellence while highlighting Liebherr’s growing presence in industrial and heavy-lift applications across Southeast Asia.
