Waygate Technologies, a Baker Hughes business, and GE Aerospace have introduced new automated inspection solutions designed to transform aircraft engine maintenance. The companies deployed advanced Menu Directed Inspection (MDI) templates for GEnx engines, aiming to improve inspection speed, accuracy, and consistency.
The rollout marks a major step in the companies’ ongoing Joint Technology Development Agreement (JTDA), which began in 2023 and focuses on integrating AI and automation into engine inspection workflows.
Standardizing Engine Inspections with AI Guidance
The new MDI templates support borescope inspections for GEnx-1B and GEnx-2B engines. Engineers use these templates through the Mentor Visual iQ+ system. The solution embeds guided workflows and AI-assisted tools that help inspectors capture consistent, high-quality images.
The system provides real-time visual overlays and reference images. These features guide inspectors to align with Aircraft Maintenance Manual requirements, especially for high-pressure turbine blade inspections. As a result, teams achieve greater standardization and reduce variability between operators.
Michael Domke, General Manager at Waygate Technologies, said the deployment reflects a shared commitment to advancing automation in engine maintenance. He noted that combining inspection expertise with AI accelerates the shift toward digital maintenance systems.
Improving Efficiency and Inspection Accuracy
The new inspection templates introduce several operational improvements. They automate image and video labeling, which strengthens data traceability. Inspectors can also switch between inspection areas easily and store results in real time using Waygate’s cloud-based platform.
The system integrates both automated and manual 3D measurement tools. These include line, area, depth, and profile measurements, which help teams assess engine components more accurately. This capability speeds up defect detection and decision-making during maintenance.
Nicole Jenkins, Chief MRO Engineer at GE Aerospace, said the collaboration enhances consistency and productivity. She emphasized that automation allows maintenance teams to work more efficiently while maintaining high safety standards.
Supporting Workforce Development
The templates also address workforce challenges in the aviation maintenance sector. Clear visual guidance reduces the learning curve for new technicians. Teams can reach proficiency faster and perform inspections with greater confidence.
By simplifying complex inspection procedures, the system helps organizations maintain operational continuity despite skilled labor shortages.
Driving the Future of Digital Maintenance
This initiative reflects a broader industry shift toward predictive and automated maintenance. AI-powered inspection tools now play a critical role in improving reliability and reducing downtime in aviation operations.
Through their JTDA, Waygate Technologies and GE Aerospace continue to expand automation capabilities across engine inspection processes. Their collaboration focuses on increasing efficiency, enhancing safety, and delivering scalable solutions for global fleets.
Availability and Next Steps
The GEnx MDI templates are now available through GE Aerospace’s Customer Technical Education Center. Operators can integrate the solution into existing maintenance workflows to improve inspection outcomes immediately.
As the aviation industry adopts more intelligent maintenance systems, this partnership positions both companies at the forefront of AI-driven inspection and digital transformation.
The shift toward automation mirrors broader industrial trends, including advances in additive manufacturing in heavy equipment production.
