Fluor Corporation has secured a new contract to provide feasibility study services for Anglo American’s Woodsmith mining project in North Yorkshire, England. The award further strengthens Fluor’s position in large-scale mining infrastructure and underground project development.
Advancing One of the World’s Largest Polyhalite Mining Projects
To begin with, the Woodsmith project is considered one of the world’s largest known polyhalite fertilizer developments.
The underground mine will access a major polyhalite deposit located beneath North Yorkshire and transport extracted material through a 37-kilometer underground conveyor tunnel to a processing facility in Teesside.
As a result, the project is expected to become a significant long-term supplier of low-carbon fertilizer for global agricultural markets.
Fluor to Deliver Feasibility Study Services
Importantly, Fluor will provide feasibility study and technical evaluation services as Anglo American advances the project toward completion.
Although the contract value was not disclosed, Fluor stated that it will recognize the award during the second quarter of 2026.
Moreover, the selection reflects growing demand for engineering expertise in complex underground mining infrastructure projects, particularly those involving large-scale tunneling, shaft sinking, and material handling systems.
Supporting Sustainable Mining and Fertilizer Production
The Woodsmith development aligns with broader mining industry trends focused on sustainable resource extraction and low-carbon industrial solutions.
Polyhalite fertilizer is increasingly viewed as a critical agricultural input because it contains multiple nutrients while requiring less processing compared to conventional fertilizers.
Consequently, the project supports growing global interest in sustainable fertilizer production and resource-efficient mining operations.
In addition, the mine’s underground transportation system is designed to reduce surface disruption while improving operational efficiency.
Large-Scale Underground Construction Continues
Construction activities at the Woodsmith site are already underway, including tunneling and shaft sinking operations.
Once operational, the mine is expected to produce approximately 13 million tonnes of polyhalite fertilizer annually.
This positions the development among the largest mining infrastructure projects currently under construction in the United Kingdom.
Furthermore, the project is expected to contribute to regional economic development through long-term industrial investment, infrastructure expansion, and employment opportunities.
Industry Context: Growing Investment in Critical Minerals and Mining Infrastructure
Overall, the project reflects increasing global investment in critical minerals, sustainable fertilizers, and strategic mining infrastructure.
Similarly, mining companies are prioritizing projects that support long-term agricultural demand, resource security, and lower-carbon industrial processes.
This trend also aligns with broader infrastructure and industrial development initiatives focused on:
- Sustainable mining technologies
- Underground transportation systems
- Critical mineral supply chains
- Industrial decarbonization strategies
- Resource-efficient extraction methods
Fluor Expands Presence in Global Mining Projects
For Fluor, the award reinforces its expertise in mining and metals engineering, procurement, and project execution services.
The company continues expanding its involvement in large-scale industrial and infrastructure developments worldwide, particularly in mining, energy, and advanced manufacturing sectors.
Outlook
With feasibility work progressing and major construction activities already underway, the Woodsmith project represents a significant milestone in the future of sustainable fertilizer production and underground mining development.
As demand for critical agricultural minerals continues to grow, large-scale projects such as Woodsmith are expected to play an increasingly important role in global resource and food security strategies.
