Skanska has been selected to build a major rail infrastructure project in New Jersey, USA, supporting the expansion and reliability of one of the country’s busiest passenger rail corridors.
Major Hudson Tunnel Project Contract Awarded
Skanska, together with joint venture partner Creamer Sanzari, will deliver the New Jersey Surface Alignment Project (Package 3) for the Gateway Development Commission.
The contract is valued at USD 712 million, with Skanska’s share worth approximately USD 454 million (around SEK 4.3 billion). The company will record the order in its U.S. bookings for the second quarter of 2026.
The project forms part of the wider Hudson Tunnel Project and will take place in Secaucus and North Bergen, New Jersey.
New Rail Infrastructure to Improve Capacity
The design-build project will create about 7,540 feet (approximately 2,200 meters) of new rail infrastructure.
The work will connect the future passenger rail tunnel with the existing Northeast Corridor (NEC). As a result, the project will help improve service reliability and increase capacity along a critical transportation route.
Complex Construction Scope
The project includes several major structures, including:
- Retaining walls supported by deep foundations
- A railroad bridge over Secaucus Road
- A pile-supported viaduct across wetlands
- Steel and concrete bridge structures
- A railroad crossing over freight rail networks
Skanska and its partner will manage both design and construction activities.
Project Timeline
Construction is scheduled to begin in June 2026.
The team expects to complete the project by 2030.
The New Jersey Surface Alignment Project represents another step toward strengthening regional rail connections and supporting future transportation demand.
